Operation
The Essex PB&R Pilot Unit is to be used in tandem with a Pilot’s Oxygen Mask. It consists of a protective hood and neck seal that, when donned along with an onboard oxygen mask, protects the cockpit crew from smoke, toxic fumes and heat. The Pilot Unit also provides a reservoir of air and heat protection that provides the cockpit crew time to disconnect the oxygen tube and escape the plane. The Pilot Unit is to be used by trained individuals in aircraft emergencies.
WARNING: The Pilot Unit is designed for heat and fume/smoke protection only and is not a breathing device. It is designed to be used with the pilot’s oxygen mask. Use of the Pilot Unit without simultaneous use of a functioning oxygen mask may result in suffocation and death.

Note: The equipment design life of a Pilot Unit, Model # MR-10008N was originally specified as being in excess of ten (10) years when properly stored. As of January 1, 2003, Essex PB & R recommends that the units be replaced after ten (10) years. All newly manufactured Pilot Units will be labeled with a “Replace By Date” expiration label.
In order to determine the age of the Pilot Units already in-service, the serial number label on the base of the hood shell needs to be examined. The second and third digits of the serial designate the year of manufacture.
Examples:
- Serial # of P9400179 (Example Based on if the Current Date were June 2004)
The 1st digit - designates that the unit is a Pilot Unit
The 2nd and 3rd digits - designate that the unit was manufactured in 1994
The remaining digits - designate that the units was the 179th Pilot Unit made in 1994
2004 – 1994 = 10 years, therefore, this unit is acceptable for use (until January 1, 2005).
- Serial # of P9300250 (Example Based on if the Current Date were June 2004)
The 1st digit - designates that the unit is a Pilot Unit
The 2nd and 3rd digits - designate that the unit was manufactured in 1993
The remaining digits - designate that the units was the 250th Pilot Unit made in 1993
2004 – 1993 = 11 years, therefore, this unit has expired and needs to be pulled from service and replaced with a new Pilot Hood Unit.
